Q&A With Kirkby Milers
We caught up with James Warburton from Kirkby Milers to ask some questions about their running club. We found out how and why Kirkby Milers were started, who can join the club and we asked about their event coming up on the 8th October.
Why Did You Take Up Running?
Due to being rubbish at football, I took up running. I quickly found a love and satisfaction for completing tough races, especially long distance and fell races.
What Made You Start Kirkby Milers?
We wanted to create a running club with no elitism and bring back the fun factor. We would recognise everyone, not just the fast runners in the running community. Bringing the fun factor back into it was a big objective for us.
We also wanted to give local juniors a platform for them to take part in athletics and train with qualified coaches.
What Keeps You Motivated To Run Kirkby Milers?
Trying to forever improve and maintain the smooth running of the club for the members. Seeing the way it helps our members in running, athletics but also socially bond is amazing when you step back and look at it from a far. Having a great committee who between us put in many of unseen hours helps make it a rewarding experience.
What’s Your Biggest Achievement Up To Now?
Our first time we won Club of the Year at the Merseyside running community awards. We hadn’t been going even 12 months and was shortlisted against two great clubs who had been going for 30+ years. We was ecstatic to just be shortlisted, to win a public vote made it a great night and debut year.
Can Any Level Runner Join Kirkby Milers?
We welcome and cater for all levels of runners by having appropriate groups. Beginners to running and the club are more than made welcome.
Can You Explain In A Couple Of Sentences What The Kirkby Milers Community Is Like?
The Green Army is a massive supportive family. Running friendships and relationships have been created and continue to blossom. There are many friends for life at the club now which helps keep our community spirit.
Do You Yhink It's Important For Kids To Join A Running Club?
With joining a club the juniors can develop their skills and learn new ones from our great junior coaching team. It also gives them a sense of belonging being in a group with other juniors wanting to learn in a sport they love.
Do You Think It’s Important To Be Mentally Strong When It Comes To Running?
No but it can help depending on your goals. We have many members from different backgrounds who help encourage each other to overcome mental obstacles.
Can You Tell Us About The Event You Are Running In October?
We have a 10 mile road race and 1 mile fun run to be held in Knowsley Safari Park on the 8th October. The 10 mile race has already sold out and promises to be a cracker with our safari theme.
Why Have You Put The Event On?
We want to help build the profile of our running club. On a personal level, I enjoy being race director at Croxteth Hall Parkrun and also try to excel myself in help building something new for others to enjoy.
Why Have You Chosen The Safari Park To Hold The Event?
The safari park is ideal with the facilities it holds. From an indoor restaurant, plus outdoor bbq, too changing rooms and secure car park. The Safari Park has also offered a discount price of £5 to enter the park for a car of up to 7 people, providing one has entered the race.
